Emergency Assistance Alleviates the Suffering of Disadvantaged Families

November 2009

Through assistance provided by the Civic Engagement Program (CEP) with funding from USAID, a program called ACTED has been able to provide much needed assistance to civilians in the Gaza Strip who had been gravely impacted by the recent conflict in January 2009. During June and July 2009, ACTED successfully distributed hygiene kits, kitchen kits, and blankets to 1350 families affected by the Gaza war, as well as 170 tents for families whose homes were destroyed.

Heba Musa and her family are among those who received non-food item assistance from USAID/CEP through the ACTED program. Heba’s family suffered gravely during the conflict, when her husband and both of his parents were killed in a bombing next to their home in Gaza City. In addition to the loss of life, their home was destroyed and all of their possessions were lost. The 35-year-old mother and her five young children were left with no choice but to move into her father’s family house. Heba now resides in a small two-room home with a total of 13 people.

“I had only 300 Shekels (approximately US$75) left of my savings,” Heba said. “I actually had planned to use the money to buy many of the things in the hygiene kit, so this is a great relief for me. I am very happy about the quality, quantity and diversity of what ACTED provided.” Heba adds that the money saved can now go towards feeding and clothing her children.
