Ramallah, West Bank, March 7, 2010 – CHF International, with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), will respond to emergency infrastructure repairs at the YWCA of Ramallah following extensive damages to the first floor resulting from heavy rains in late February. Flooding caused the collapse of one of the walls, and the loss of all furniture and equipment on the first floor.
The site, which is used for the Vocational Training Center of the YWCA of Ramallah, offers courses and programs to 60 full-time students. The center also supports activities serving 300 youth and children. As a result of the damage, all activities are now halted.
Responding immediately to the crisis, the CHF International engineering team visited the site the day after the flooding to conduct an assessment of the damage. The project will fully address the damages caused by the flooding, allowing the center to return to its original use.
The Emergency Jobs Program (EJP), funded by USAID and implemented by CHF International, aims to alleviate humanitarian and short-term unemployment problems, laying the foundations for more sustainable economic vitality through labor-intensive and community managed methods for the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of small-scale infrastructure. Projects are designed in close collaboration with communities, the public sector, and the private sector. During the project period, up to 200 small-scale infrastructure projects will be implemented. To date, over 174,500 person days of employment have been created through EJP infrastructure projects.
Since 1993, USAID has provided more than $2.9 billion in U.S. economic assistance to Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza via projects designed to combat poverty, improve health and education, create jobs, and promote good governance.
