Northern West Bank – On Wednesday, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Palestinian Authority inaugurated three new projects in the Northern West Bank under USAID’s Civic Engagement Project. The total value of the projects is $426,000. First, USAID Mission Director Howard Sumka inaugurated the rehabilitation of parts of the old town in Deir Istiya in the Salfit Governorate at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Minister of Local Governorance Khaled Al-Qawasmeh, Salfit Governor Munir Al ‘Abbushi, and representatives from the community and civil society organizations. USAID contributed over $100,000 worth of materials to the last phase of the project that completed the rehabilitation of the alleys in this historic town.
In addition, USAID and the Tulkarim Municipality inaugurated the eastern public transportation square in Tulkarim in the presence of the Governor of Tulkarim, Talal Dweikat, and Tulkarim Mayor Ahmad Abdel Raziq. This project, which cost $190,000, will play an essential role in helping the Municipality limit congestion caused by buses and taxies in the city center, and create open space in the market-place by moving dozens of mobile retailers from the city center to the new transportation square.
Finally, the USAID Mission Director, Governor of Jenin Qaddura Moussa, Head of Deir Ghazala Village Council Ghassan Zakharna and other PA representatives inaugurated the new public garden and community hall in the village of Deir Ghazala in the Jenin Governorate. USAID provided $125,000 to implement the two projects.
Since 1994, USAID has provided more than $2.2 billion in U.S. economic assistance to Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza via projects designed to reduce poverty, improve health and education, implement infrastructure and water projects, create jobs, and promote democracy and good governance.
