Nablus – On December 2, 2010, the Palestinian Authority (PA) celebrated the inauguration of the newlyMission Director Michael Harvey at the Nablus post office openning ceremony refurbished Nablus Post Office.  The renovation project, a partnership between the PA Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), was funded by USAID.  PA Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology Mashhour Abu Dakka, USAID Mission Director Michael Harvey, and other PA and postal services representatives attended the ribbon cutting event.

USAID Mission Director Michael Harvey thanked the Palestinian Authority and Minister Abu Dakka for their partnership in implementing the project and their pioneering role in improving public services in the West Bank.  “The Nablus Post Office is a great model which we hope will set an example to other regions in the West Bank,” said Mission Director Harvey.

Support from USAID made possible substantial renovations to the Post Office, transforming it into an efficient, modern facility, and provided training to postal staff, significantly improving the quality and efficiency of services to the Palestinian public.  The opening of the Nablus Post Office is part of the Palestine Post development plan, which maintains four post offices, trains postal personnel, and is responsible for developing and increasing the means of mail transport and distribution.

The USAID-funded Nablus Post Office rehabilitation project also included new furniture, the installation of a new heating and air conditioning system and a new computer network, as well as connecting the Post Office to the International Postal System, allowing it to make direct mail exchanges with other countries.

Since 1994, USAID has provided more than $3.3 billion in U.S. economic assistance to Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.  USAID coordinates closely with the PA to support projects that reduce poverty, improve health and education, build infrastructure, create jobs, and promote democracy and good governance.
