USAID’s West Bank and Gaza Mission responds to health challenges in the West Bank and Gaza with an integrated portfolio that includes the following areas:

  • Health care system strengthening.

  • Provision of medical equipment.

  • Expansion of access to higher quality medical facilities.

  • Food assistance to vulnerable Palestinian families.

  • Strengthening the institutional capacities of the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Health (MOH) and local non-governmental organizations.

Since 1993, USAID has invested $282.5 Million in Health and Humanitarian Assistance activities benefitting Palestinian people and institutions.

Main successes include:

  • Provided medical equipment and health commodities supporting MoH and partner NGOs.

  • Introduced a health information system to modernize patient care in four MOH hospitals and seven primary health care centers. 

  • Developed an essential package of services for four levels of MoH primary health care clinics as a national quality standard.

  • Trained health workers in leadership and management, procurement practices, community mobilization, and behavior change communication.

  • Currently providing food to 160,000 food-insecure Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.

  • Expanded the Holy Family Hospital’s Well Women Program to provide services through outpatient and outreach clinics in remote villages.

World Food Programme (WFP)

Since the outbreak of the second intifada in September 2000, Palestinian families have experienced increased poverty and food insecurity. The 2010 Socio-Economic and Food Security Survey estimated that 1.43 million people
are food insecure in the Palestinian Territories, approximately 33 percent o.f the population. In Gaza, 52 percent of households are food insecure.

The World Food Programme (WFP) receives direct cash support from the USAID West Bank and Gaza Mission which is complemented by periodic in-kind donations of Food for Peace PL 480 Title II commodities.

USAID's Flagship Palestinian Health Sector Reform and Development Project
supports the emergence of a functional, democratic Palestinian health sector capable of meeting the priority public health needs of its people. The project works with the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Health (MoH), nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), community‐based organizations (CBOs), and educational institutions to strengthen their capacities and services. The project specifically targets health sector governance, clinical and communitybased service delivery, and the procurement of essential medical equipment and commodities.

Holy Family Hospital (HFH)

On October 18, 2010 the hospital celebrated the birth of the 50,000th baby, Aisha. To celebrate this occasion, the first baby born at the hospital (Dina) returned to Holy Family to meet Aisha and her family along with hospital staff and guests On October 18, 2010, the Holy Family Hospital celebrated the birth of the 50,000th baby, Aisha. To celebrate this occasion, the first baby born at the hospital (Dina, seen right above) returned to Holy Family to meet Aisha and her family along with hospital staff and guests.

USAID supports the Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem as a center of excellence for quality maternal and baby care, especially for high risk pregnancies and newborns. USAID funds have helped the hospital expand services in response to evolving community needs, and promote the sustainability of the facility's
specialized care capacity.

USAID support has provided prenatal information and care, improved training for medical professionals, and targeted activities to emphasize emergency care.
