USAID funds repair of local fire station serving 1 million Iraqis
Renovated Kirkuk Central Fire Station
Photo: USAID/ Debbie Morello
Fire fighters at newly renovated Kirkuk fire station load fire hoses and tools into fire truck.
The Kirkuk Central Fire Station was looted of most of its contents; windows and doors were broken; wiring pulled out, the back-up generator was destroyed; most of the building was damaged and equipment was destroyed or stolen. The ability of the fire department to respond to fire emergencies in this city of approximately 1 million inhabitants was severely compromised. USAID, working in coordination with Coalition Provisional Authority, provided assistance to restore the department to working condition.
