Before & After

Egypt and U.S. celebrate completion of Bab Zuweila project
Restoring Antiquities in Islamic Cairo

The United States provided 2.8 million Egyptian pounds (L.E.) for the restoration of Bab Zuweila, a treasured 900-year-old Islamic monument in the heart of historic Cairo. The U.S. has provided more than L.E. 55 million funding for the preservation and restoration of antiquities in Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo, Luxor, Alexandria, and at Red Sea sites.

Bab Zuweila, before the renovation
BEFORE: With the passage of time, moisture, air pollution, and traffic wore away the structure of the southern gate at Bab Zuweila in Cairo. The upper terrace of the gate and the bases of minarets were in dire need of repair.

Bab Zuweila, after the renovation
AFTER: After the conservation project was complete, the medieval remnants were protected by a new waterproof floor with stone pavement, and all masonry was cleaned and consolidated.
