Repairing Teacher Training Colleges |
|
|
In a country where many rural teachers have no more than a primary school education, teacher training is critical to the nation's education system. USAID is focused on renovating the teacher training colleges, while the Afghanistan government is providing training for thousands of teachers throughout the country to ensure its children of a brighter, more prosperous future.

Before
The Kabul Teacher Training College-one of 12 in the country-was utterly destroyed by vicious factional fighting in 1992 and left a useless ruin. It lay in a devastated zone inhabited by destitute, returned refugees and internally displaced persons.

After
Funded at a cost of less than $100,000, the renovation of the main classroom building took less than four months to complete and provided hundreds of days of labor for workers in a devastated community. Now completed, the college is beginning to train up to 600 teachers a year-half of whom will be women. USAID has also rehabilitated the teacher training college in Kundu, begun work on teacher training colleges in Herat and other locations, and is considering renovating the remaining colleges as part of its efforts to support education throughout Afghanistan.
