USAID
Projects in Sierra Leone
Sierra
Leone is striving to consolidate peace and rebuild social
and economic institutions following the brutal civil war
of 1991-2002, a war which cost tens of thousands of lives,
displaced approximately one million people, and destroyed
much of the country’s infrastructure. With the remarkably
peaceful national and local elections that were concluded
in September 2007 and July 2008 respectively, Sierra Leone
is becoming a sub-regional model of successful post-conflict
reconstruction and development.
Sierra
Leone faces daunting challenges, however. It is ranked
last among 177 countries in the 2007/2008 United Nations
Human Development Index. The majority of Sierra Leoneans
are unemployed, malnutrition is widespread, and maternal
and infant mortality are the highest in the world.
The
goals of U.S. assistance in Sierra Leone are to prevent
conflict from recurring, help Sierra Leone to continue
to become more democratic, accountable and just; improve
social services; and spur economic growth and job creation.
USAID activities support these goals by helping improve
elections management and the conduct of political parties,
building an active civil society, and improving local
governance; helping create opportunities for livelihoods,
improved food security, and greater agricultural productivity;
and fostering Sierra Leone’s capacity for health service
delivery.
