Two-day Workshop on AGOA to be Held in Kigali

Kigali, Rwanda│Thursday, March 1, 2007

A two-day workshop on the U.S. African Growth & Opportunity Act (AGOA) is being held March 5-6 at the Kigali Serena Hotel. Sponsored by the U.S. Embassy and USAID, the U.S. foreign assistance agency, “Exporting to the US: Taking Advantage of AGOA” is co-hosted by the Rwanda Private Sector Federation and the Rwanda Investment and Export Promotion Agency.

The program is designed to educate export or near export-ready Rwandan entrepreneurs on the advantages and challenges of expanding their markets. Guest speakers will include His Excellency the U.S. Ambassador to Rwanda, Michael Arietti; MINICOM Minister of State for Investment and Trade, Vincent Karega; and U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics, David McCormick.

In addition to featuring the Rwandese perspective on exporting to the U.S. and Rwandese success stories, the program will include sessions on qualifying under AGOA, finding markets in the U.S., understanding the U.S. consumer’s desires, and specialized break-out sessions on agribusiness; handicrafts, apparel and leather goods; and mining. The second-day agenda includes a look at U.S.-Rwanda trade relations, export certifications and visas, financing exports, and available resources for assistance.

AGOA was signed into law in 2000 to promote economic development and expedite integrating African economies into the world trading system. Through the cooperative efforts of governments, private sector, and civil society, AGOA has expanded duty-free access to more than 6,400 African products to U.S. markets.
