The National University of Rwanda School of Public Health (NURSPH) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) are pleased to announce the graduation of twenty-seven health care professionals from a Certificate Training Program in monitoring and evaluating HIV/AIDS. The course, funded through the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), improves Rwanda’s ability to address HIV/AIDS by empowering professionals to use accurate information in order to plan lifesaving health programs.
The three-month program entitled “Strategic Information in Support of Improved HIV/AIDS Programming” trains participants to implement HIV/AIDS programs. Rwanda is short of human capacity to fight the disease, but graduates now have the skills necessary to monitor and evaluate national initiatives.
“USAID is working with the Government of Rwanda to increase the number of trained professionals who can monitor and evaluate HIV/AIDS and the country’s response,” explained USAID/Rwanda’s Acting Director, George E. Lewis. “The course directly contributes to the Government’s goal outlined in the Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy (EDPRS) of improving human resources and building institutional capacity to ensure that health care is accessible for the entire population.”
Students earned graduate-level credit from either NURSPH or Tulane University in the United States. Opened in 2001 and supported by PEPFAR, NURSPH was created to improve the education of health care workers in Rwanda. The school offers two masters programs Master of Public Health and Master of Science in Epidemiology and numerous certificate programs.
The Graduation Ceremony will be held today, Wednesday, November 21, 2007, at 3:30 PM at the Alpha Palace Hotel in Kigali.
