On Saturday, July 21, 2007, IMPURUZA was crowned winner of a national drama competition at Amohoro Stadium in Kigali. The event was funded by USAID and the German development bank, KfW, to highlight the importance of family planning.
In front of approximately 3,000 people including the Minister of Health, Dr. Jean Damascene Ntawukuliryayo, and other distinguished guests five finalist groups, representing Rwanda’s four provinces and Kigali, performed skits demonstrating the link between family planning, healthy families and poverty reduction. The panel of judges, which included national and international theater experts, awarded the winning prize of 500,000 FRW to IMPURUZA, which hails from Ruhango District in Southern Province.
The finalists, selected after winning their district and regional competitions, will continue community outreach activities focusing on the role of men in family planning, myths and misconceptions about contraceptives and socio-cultural barriers to a successful national program.
Saturday’s event was also the official launch of Confiance, a brand of oral and injectable contraceptives available in private-sector pharmacies.
The competition was organized by Population Services International (PSI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health to address how family planning issues are perceived throughout Rwanda. With USAID and KfW funding, PSI works to increase the demand for modern contraceptives and improve the health of both mothers and children.
USAID currently provides over US$6 million a year in support of the Government of Rwanda’s national family planning strategy.
