The partnership between the U.S. and Rwanda was highlighted during the 2007 HIV/AIDS Implementers’ Meeting. The event was held in Kigali, Rwanda from June 16-19 and attracted more than 1,500 participants from around the globe. Rwanda was selected to host due to its leadership in the global fight against AIDS.
We could not have a better place for the first Implementers’ Meeting to highlight your leadership and your success” commented Ambassador Mark Dybul, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, during the conference’s opening ceremony. “Rwanda is a global leader in the global fight…You are a living example of the power of partnerships and of this meeting’s theme, ‘Scaling up through Partnerships.’”
Dr. Innocent Nyaruhirira, the Minister of State in charge of HIV/AIDS and other epidemics in the Rwanda Ministry of Health, noted that “we in Rwanda strongly believe that united we can build a world released from poverty related diseases among which are HIV, malaria and tuberculosis, particularly among the newborns, and the youth. We have no choice but to keep the promises and…now. This can be achieved through the kind of partnerships we are experiencing here in Kigali.”
Organizers received rave reviews for the venues, informative presentations and discussions about best practices and lessons learned.
PEPFAR has successfully supported the rapid scale-up of HIV/AIDS services in Rwanda because the U.S. Government has worked shoulder-to-shoulder with the Government of Rwanda. PEPFAR not only saves lives, but also strengthens partnerships between governments a perfect example of public health diplomacy.
