WELCOME FROM THE USAID/RWANDA DIRECTOR
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Rwanda is dedicated to improving the lives of all Rwandans through better access to health care, increased economic growth and enhanced governance.
All USAID programs support the Government of Rwanda’s objectives. Specifically, USAID works to help Rwanda achieve the goals set forth in Vision 2020 and the Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy. Our programs have grown substantially in the past couple of years, especially in health. We are one of Rwanda's largest development partners current annual funding exceeds $125 million.
Working together with the Government of Rwanda and implementing partners, USAID supports programs in health, economic growth and democracy and governance. Rwanda is a focus country for two U.S. Presidential initiatives the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI). We work closely with our sister organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to implement these initiatives.
PEPFAR prevents new infections and provides care and treatment for individuals infected or affected by HIV/AIDS by supplying antiretroviral drugs and treatment for opportunistic infections, supporting voluntary counseling and testing, preventing mother-to-child transmission, and supporting education and life skills training for orphans and vulnerable children.
PMI is a comprehensive program that fights malaria and saves lives through indoor residual spraying, insecticide-treated bed nets, essential drugs and prevention of malaria in pregnant women.
Both initiatives diminish the burden of these diseases to enable economic growth.
Rwanda is also preparing a Millennium Challenge Corporation Threshold Country Plan to address political rights, civil liberties and voice and accountability. USAID will continue to work with the Government of Rwanda to finalize its proposal.
Success is not possible without strong partnerships with the Government of Rwanda and implementing partners. We, as Americans, are committed to helping Rwanda realize its goals.
Thank you for your interest in our programs.
