USAID Funds Disaster Management Project in Danang

Wednesday, July 25, 2007

Nearly 200 officials from Cam Le district in Danang are taking disaster-management training courses this summer to reduce the coastal area’s vulnerability to typhoons and other disasters. Cam Le suffered extensive damage during last year's Typhoon Xangsane.

The project combines training and planning: identifying hazards, understanding increased risks from climate change, analyzing the causes and consequences of disasters, and formulating proactive management strategies.

The Community-based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) program, part of the larger PROMISE disaster relief project, is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development. The five-month program runs through August.

"This course raises awareness about disaster management and helps local governments and communities develop annual disaster preparedness plans,” said Duong Thi Hoai Trang, project coordinator of the Center for International Studies and Cooperation Vietnam, which is running the program with the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center. "The program has been very successful, involving with the community, local authorities and district agencies."
