Remarks by Andrew S. Natsios, Administrator, USAID
Pakistan Embassy
June 25, 2003
Thank you, Paula. President Musharraf, Foreign Secretary Khokhar, Ambassador Qazi, friends and colleagues, it is a pleasure and honor to be here tonight.
As President Bush said yesterday at Camp David, "the friendship between the United States and Pakistan is vital to the security and stability of South Asia."
Our countries have been strong partners in Afghanistan and the fight against terrorism.
But there is more to our friendship than this. As President Bush stressed, "greater economic development is also critical to fulfilling the hopes of the Pakistani people."
Bringing this development to Pakistan is the primary reason the U.S. Agency for International Development re-opened its Mission there last July.
We greatly appreciate the warmth with which our Mission staff has been received. And we are very pleased to be back in the country and have the chance to work with the Pakistani people on issues of great importance to both our countries - basic education, maternal and child health, democracy, and microfinance.
The new $3 billion assistance package the President proposed yesterday for Pakistan should certainly help advance these goals.
The Agreement on Science and Technology Cooperation, which the Department of State and the Pakistan Foreign Ministry are signing tonight, and for which USAID supplied the initial funds, will add another dimension to our cooperation with Pakistan, strengthening our ties in areas such as agriculture, energy, HIV/AIDS, information technology and the environment.
Our job is to make these programs and agreements work, so that Pakistanis everywhere can see improvements in their daily lives.
For, as the great poet and philosopher Mohammed Iqbal has written, "In each man's hand lies the nation's fate."
Thank you.
