Administrator J. Brian Atwood
Opening of the AIDSCAP Conference: Lessons Learned
Washington, D.C., October 7, 1997
U.S. Agency for International Development
Thank you. I would like to welcome you all to this very
important conference and am glad that you could all be here
today. A tremendous amount of time and effort has gone into
making this conference a reality. The lessons being exchanged
during this conference are the culmination of years of hard work
both in the field and here in the United States. The work you are
doing is absolutely vital to public health, development and to
future generations. For that, I salute you.
Today we have the pleasure of being joined by
Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco. Congresswoman
Pelosi, as most of you probably know, has been a true champion
in the battle against HIV/AIDS since she was elected in 1987.
She has been at the front of the battle lines over this issue
domestically and internationally. It has been her leadership that
has helped educate not only the public but other members of
Congress.
The Congresswoman's family has a long history of public
service {Father: Thomas D'Alesandro, former House member and
Mayor of Baltimore}, and it is a tradition of which she should be
very proud. I am pleased that USAID has the opportunity to work
in collaboration with such inspired leaders in our Congress. I
want you all to join me in welcoming Congresswoman Pelosi.
