Introduction by J. Brian Atwood of Congresswoman Connie Morella
Secretary's Open Forum
Washington, D.C., June 13, 1997
U.S. Agency for International Development
Now it is a special pleasure to introduce Congresswoman
Connie Morella of Maryland to this Open Forum. She is
Chairman of the House Science Committee's Technology
Subcommittee and also serves on its Basic Research
Subcommittee. She serves on the Government Reform and
Oversight Committee and its Civil Service Subcommittee, and is
vice-chairman of the Subcommittee of the District of Columbia.
Connie Morella is a recognized leader in a number of
matters of special importance to USAID -- on issues of women's
health, education, and economic equity and in the fight against
HIV\AIDS, as well as environmental and sustainable development
issues, especially environmentally sound technology and
population stabilization.
Long active in international and human rights issues,
Congresswoman Morella represented the United States at the
U.N. Conference on Population and Development in Cairo and
co-chaired the congressional delegation to the U. N. Fourth
World Conference on Women in Beijing. She was also the first
woman to chair the Arms Control and Foreign Policy Caucus.
Elected last November to a sixth term in Congress, Connie
Morella brings a rich and varied background to that body. She
served eight years in the Maryland House of Delegates and was
an English professor for fifteen years. A graduate of Boston
University, she also holds a Master's degree from the American
University. She and her law professor husband, Tony, have three
children and they reared her late sister's six children as well.
We are delighted to have this warm, talented and
accomplished public servant address the Secretary's Open Forum
today -- Congresswoman Connie Morella.
