Not long after the devastating rains ceased in Pakistan, a fifth of the country was inundated with water, and millions of lives disrupted. Since the floods, USAID and the U.S. government have responded with nearly $600 million in assistance, directly helping millions of Pakistanis with shelter, food, clean water, agricultural assistance, and health care. All the while, USAID has continued to work closely with the Pakistani government to ensure that activities reflect mutual priorities and are responsive to the most urgent needs while building government capacity to pursue economic and political reforms. USAID's Pakistan Earthquake Reconstruction and Recovery Program focuses on rebuilding key social infrastructure in affected communities.

USAID has worked with the country's Ministry of Public Health for eight years to support midwifery training for women across Afghanistan. Classes last 24 months and cover a range of both clinical and practical trainings, including in antenatal, natal, and postnatal care.
