Stabilization

Stable communities are less hospitable to terrorists and other forms of extremism. USAID's stabilization efforts in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Khyber Pakhtunkwa Province (KP) are critical to long-term regional stability as well as U.S. security interests. The stablization program seeks to enhance the legitimacy and writ of the Government of Pakistan while improving the economic and social conditions of remote communities affected by conflict. In particular, the program seeks to support local authorities as they forge good working relationships with their village constituencies and meet basic infrastructure needs.

Objectives

  • Support the Government of Pakistan's "clear, hold, and build" effort in FATA and KP
  • Rebuild infrastructure destroyed by conflict or floods
  • Promote productive relations between communities and local officials

Results

  • USAID has funded over 215 kilometers of major roads that provide access to markets and economic opportunities that are transformative to the region.
  • USAID has worked with the Government of Pakistan to fund over 1,700 small community-based projects that address immediate needs for basic services (water, power, health, and education), jobs, and basic civilian governance in areas emerging from conflict.
