Economic Growth

Economic growth is critical to long-term stability. USAID seeks to secure a self-sustaining future for Pakistan by nurturing more competitive enterprises, more efficient market environments, more effective government policies, and more rewarding business opportunities for women. In particular, USAID works with partners to strengthen Pakistan's agricultural sector by improving the competitiveness of agricultural value chains, increasing technological innovation, promoting water use efficiency, and increasing productivity. These initiatives spur broad-based economic growth and improve the earning power of people throughout the country.

Objectives

  • Increase business competitiveness
  • Expand access to local and international markets
  • Increase agricultural productivity
  • Increase income-generating opportunities
  • Increase women’s access to economic opportunities

Results

  • USAID has trained 70,000 women micro entrepreneurs from Punjab and Sindh in basic financial literacy and enterprise management training.
  • USAID is helping increase exports of Pakistani mangos and other crops.
  • The U.S. is supporting implementation of the 2010 Afghanistan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement, which includes rehabilitated border infrastructure and new management techniques to reduce transit time.
  • U.S.-funded livelihoods activities supported over 600,000 families following the August 2009 Internally Displaced Persons crisis and 2010 flood.  After the 2010 floods, agriculture assistance reached over 500,000 households providing superior seeds and other support, dramatically increasing farmers’ wheat yields 60% above the national average.
