Project Description

This project provides assistance to internally displaced students from conflict affected areas of Malakand and SWAT, and supports the universities serving these students. USAID's Emergency Cash Transfer program provided $45 million in budget support to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for 28 selected universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Punjab, Sindh, and Gilgit Baldistan. The budget support targeted universities in areas affected by or vulnerable to extremism. Students from SWAT and the Malakand Division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa received one year scholarships and 28 universities serving internally displaced students in Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, and Gilgit Baltistan received budget support. Internally displaced students received one year tuition support, and some students also received support for boarding expenses.

Results To Date

• 7,354 internally displaced students received one year scholarships for continuation of their education in the crises situation.
• Twenty eight universities received budgetary support: 6 in Islamabad Capital Territory, 13 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 5 in Balochistan, 2 in Southern Punjab, 1 Sindh, and 1 in Gilgit Baltistan.
