Strengthening Rehabilitation in District Environment (STRIDE)

Implementing Partner: Handicap International (HI)

Funding Period: January 2010 – January 2013

Amount: $2,000,000

Purpose: Promote the inclusion of persons living with disabilities in the socio-economic life of their communities.

The program works to improve the quality and sustainability of rehabilitation treatment services in Nepal by enhancing the capacity of eight key prosthetic, orthotic, and community based rehabilitation service providers. It uses a participatory approach, working with local implementing organizations that range from disabled people’s organizations, nongovernmental organizations, specialized hospitals, government bodies, to community organizations. The program works with eleven partner organizations: seven physical rehabilitation centers and four community based organizations. Each partner brings to the project specialized technical abilities and expertise in the provision of rehabilitation services for people with disabilities.

The program works with partners to help mobilize disabled person’s organizations and community based organizations and existing networks of such organizations, in order to identify people living with disabilities who are in need of rehabilitation services, refer these people to services, and follow up with recipients after services.
