Health Education and Reconciliation Program (HEAR)

Implementing Partner: Creative Associates International, Inc.

Funding Period: October 2006 - September 2011

Amount: $3,000,000

Purpose: Provide access to and raise the quality of primary school education and health services for school-aged children in two areas of southern Sudan—Abyei and Blue Nile.

Objectives

Work to benefit school-age children in the following three areas:

  • Education
    • Increase the school enrollment among primary-school-age children
    • Improve the quality of education provided by training teachers and improving educational materials
  • Health
    • Improve selected health indicators, such as nutritional status and immunizations
    • Improve water and sanitation in schools
    • Raise the awareness of best practices in health and hygience among primary school children
  • Community
    • Strengthen parent-teacher associations
    • Foster working relationships between communities, local authorities, and relevant government ministries

To improve both the availability and quality of education in the southern and eastern provinces of Kordofan, Southern Blue Nile, and Abyei, referred to as “the Three Areas,” USAID’s Displaced Children and Orphans Fund supports the Health Education and Reconciliation Program (HEAR), implemented by Creative Associates International, Inc. The project promotes education and health for children, and strengthens school governance through community groups. The project works to train education and health workers to plan, implement, and monitor health and education services. It also develops resource materials and community-based projects that not only reinforce what students are learning, but promotes good health and hygiene.
