Agriculture for Children’s Empowerment

Implementing Partners: ACDI/VOCA (Agricultural Cooperative Development International)

Amount: $2,626,203

Purpose: Enable families and caregivers to better care for children by providing them with means to increase their income through farming

Objectives:

  • Strengthen the vegetable and paddy rice production industries in Bong and Nimba counties
  • Implement public information campaigns in targeted communities on children’s nutrition and the value of education
  • Introduce the Farming as a Business curriculum into local schools

In Liberia, the Agriculture for Children’s Empowerment (ACE) project is bringing farmers into profitable value chains to increase their income so that they can support and provide more nutritious food for their families. The project also aims to change the perception among students and parents of the value of education and its potential applications to everyday life. To do so, the project has conducted economic and life skills training sessions in schools and communities and has trained student volunteers to conduct those sessions for their peers. To date, the project has provided training session for more than 500 students. All schools report improvement in student’s perception of school and an increase in parental involvement in school activities.

The project also launched a program on Liberian culture at the Kendeja School during the grand opening of the RLJ Kendeja Resort in Monrovia. Children who participated are contemplating different careers that they might pursue with more education.

Implementing Partners: Save the Children Fund UK

Funding Period: September 2010 - September 2014

Amount: $700,000 per year

Purpose: Enhance protection systems for vulnerable children, particularly those without adequate parental care.

Objectives:

  • Ensure that social and health service are delivered to children by encouraging effective partnering of civl society and local government
  • Strengthen family protection and care
  • Provide children with access to primary education and health services
