Education for Income Generation and Conflict Mitigation in Nepal
Implementing Partner: Winrock International
Funding Period: January 2008 - January 2013
Amount: $2,000,000
Purpose: Prevent the exclusion of disadvantaged youth from relevant education,
training, and employment opportunities.
Objectives:
- Improve literacy, life skills, and peace building skills in disadvantaged youth
- Increase the number of disadvantaged youth securing employment after vocational or technical training
- Improve training opportunities for disadvantaged youth living in rural areas through agricultural activities
- Increase the number of scholarships given to disadvantaged youth so that they can attend school
In Nepal, Winrock International is implementing a mult-faceted project that seeks to provide disadvantaged youth with education on primary, secondary, and advanced levels; training; and employment opportunities. The project provides youth with literacy and life skills education and technical and vocational training in preparation to enter the job market.
The Government of Nepal estimates that more than 86 percent of the country's population lives in rural areas. Of these individuals, approximately two-thirds derive their income from farming or other agriculturally based businesses. For this reason, the project provides training to youth in how to increase the productivity of farms, so that they may not only better support themselves and their families, but also help strengthen the country's ability to use its own natural resources.
