Water and Sanitation
Food for Peace has made the preservation and environmentally sound development of water resources a top priority. USAID’s investments have helped improve access to safe and adequate water supply and sanitation, improve irrigation technology, enhance natural environments and develop better institutional capacity for water resources management in countries around the world. Water and sanitation activities carried out by Food for Peace cooperating sponsors include building and rehabilitating latrines, and building hand-washing stations, irrigation and sanitation systems, and water purification systems. Monetization of food is also used for campaigns to promote hand washing and food washing and the importance of clean drinking water, and for training on the use and maintenance of new facilities.
