Disaster Declared: 10/11/06
Brief Description: Extensive monsoon rains since the beginning of October led to severe flooding in 19 central and northern provinces of Thailand. The most affected provinces were Ayutthaya and Ang Thong. According to the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, the flooding caused 39 deaths, affected more than 2 million residents, led to the evacuations of thousands of households, and caused infrastructure damage of more than $6.4 million. The floods also reportedly caused skin and respiratory ailments. Access to flood-affected districts was hampered by damage to local infrastructure. The Royal Thai Government and the Thai Red Cross (TRC) provided emergency assistance to affected communities, and the TRC deployed assessment teams to determine the extent of damages. An assessment by the TRC indicated a continued need for family relief packages, potable water, and hygiene supplies.
On October 11, U.S. Ambassador to Thailand Ralph L. Boyce declared a disaster due to the magnitude of the damage caused by the flooding in central and northern Thailand. In response, OFDA provided $50,000 through USAID/Thailand to the TRC to support emergency evacuation activities and the procurement and distribution of emergency relief supplies, such as drinking water, hygiene kits, and basic household goods.
