Brief Description: Extensive flooding in northern Thailand during the week of May 22 resulted in 51 deaths, 87 missing persons, and affected more than 100,000 residents, according to the Royal Thai Government (RTG). The flooding destroyed homes, roads, bridges, and farmlands and led to the forced evacuation of more than 1,200 people. The most affected provinces were Nan, Lamphang, Phrae, Sukhothai, and Uttaradit. The RTG provided emergency assistance to the affected provinces and deployed Royal Thai military troops and assets to assist in the delivery of relief supplies. An assessment by the TRC indicated the need for family relief packages, potable water, and water containers.
On May 25, the U.S. Ambassador to Thailand Ralph L. Boyce issued a disaster declaration due to the magnitude of the damage caused by the flooding in northern Thailand. In response, OFDA provided $50,000 to the TRC for the procurement and distribution of emergency relief supplies.
