Most Recent Disaster Declaration:
Typhoon, 8-11-2009
From August 8 to 9, Typhoon Morakot passed over Taiwan with heavy rains and wind speeds of more than 100 mph, resulting in extensive flooding and mudslides. The storm caused widespread damage throughout central and southern Taiwan, particularly in Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Taitung, Nantou, Chiayi, and Tainan provinces. Typhoon Morakot resulted in the deaths of at least 108 people, with 61 people reported injured and 400 reported missing, according to international media. Taiwanese authorities reported that the storm damaged more than 130 roads and 68 bridges, cut off safe drinking water to an estimated 850,000 households, and left 130,000 households without power.
On August 11, American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Acting Director Robert S. Wang issued a disaster declaration due to the effects of the typhoon. In response, USAID/OFDA provided $250,000 through the AIT to support the relief efforts of Taiwan's national Red Cross organization.
