Somalia - Complex Emergency/Drought

Map of Somalia
Map of Somalia

Regional Team: EA
East Africa

Disaster Declared:
12/07/2001

Brief Description:
Civil strife continued in Somalia during 2002 for the eleventh consecutive year as a result of continued inter-clan conflicts. In addition, three consecutive years of below-normal rainfall have produced drought conditions throughout most of the country, with the most significant effects in the southern and northeastern areas. Although a transitional national government began in September 2000, instability and insecurity continue. More than 1.4 million Somalis have been impacted by the drought and conflict. Since 1990, the USG has provided more than $476 million to Somalia for humanitarian assistance activities.
