Brief Description: Between October 5 and November 3, 2005, the Ministry of Health of São Tomé and Príncipe reported more than 250 cases of cholera, out of a population of approximately 150,000, primarily in the Mezochi, Agua Grande, and Lobata counties in northwest São Tomé.  The epidemic followed an earlier outbreak in April and July 2005. 

On November 8, 2005, U.S. Ambassador to Gabon and to São Tomé and Príncipe R. Barrie Walkley issued a disaster declaration due to the ongoing cholera epidemic.  In response, OFDA provided $13,000 through the U.S. Embassy in Libreville to assist the Government of São Tomé and Príncipe in purchasing water containers for the distribution of clean water.  In addition, through the U.S. Embassy in Libreville, USAID encouraged Voice of America and local radio stations to broadcast public health and hygiene messages related to cholera prevention.
