Romania - Floods

Regional Team: EMCA

Disaster Declared:
04/20/2006

Brief Description:
During April 2006, heavy rains caused the Danube River to rise to the highest level in more than 100 years, submerging the Danube flood plain and delta.  According to the Government of Romania, the rains flooded approximately 35,000 hectares of farm land, at least 500 km of roads, 18 major bridges, and more than 700 homes.  Additionally, flood waters contaminated more than 1,200 wells, leaving people without access to safe drinking water.

On April 20, Chargé d'Affaires Mark A. Taplin declared a disaster due to the damage caused by the flooding in southern Romania.  In response, OFDA provided $50,000 through the USAID Regional Services Center in Budapest, Hungary, to World Vision for the procurement and distribution of emergency relief supplies to meet the immediate needs of approximately 1,250 people.
