Disaster Declared: 10/28/2005

Brief Description: On October 30, 2005, Hurricane Beta made landfall on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua near the communities of Karabal and Sandy Bay as a category two hurricane with sustained winds of 105 miles per hour. According to the Government of Nicaragua, Hurricane Beta displaced 2,580 people, damaged or destroyed 506 homes, caused extensive damage to public infrastructure, and negatively impacted the livelihoods of fishermen and farmers.

On October 28, U.S. Ambassador Paul A. Trivelli issued a disaster declaration due to the impact of Hurricane Beta. In response, OFDA locally contracted an aircraft and helicopter to conduct aerial assessments of affected areas as well as airlifted emergency relief items, such as plastic sheeting, water containers, and hygiene kits. In addition, OFDA contributed $100,000 to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for water and sanitation and health activities and provided $200,000 through USAID/Nicaragua to the U.N. World Food Program (WFP) and the Nicaraguan Red Cross for the local purchase and distribution of emergency relief supplies.
