Indian Ocean - Earthquake and Tsunamis

Disaster Declared: 12/27/2004
Brief Description: According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a magnitude
9.0 earthquake occurred off the west coast of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia on December
26 at 6:58 a.m. local time. The earthquake had a depth of 10 km and triggered massive
tsunamis that affected several countries throughout South and Southeast Asia. USAID/OFDA
is deploying a regional Disaster Assistance Response Team (USAID/DART) that will
include USAID/OFDA regional advisors, water and sanitation experts, field officers,
and information officers. USAID/DART members will be located in Sri Lanka, India,
Indonesia, and Thailand, and will coordinate the U.S. Government (USG) humanitarian
response to the earthquake and tsunami emergency.
