The Mount Nyiragongo volcano in Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), erupted on January 17, 2002, temporarily displacing more than 450,000 people. An estimated 300,000 Congolese fled to Ruhengeri and Gisenyi in Rwanda, while 100,000 were displaced within the DRC. Lava covered approximately 13 percent of the city, resulting in widespread economic and humanitarian concerns. The USG responded with more than $7 million in emergency assistance and rehabilitation programs for the Goma region.
