Central African Republic - Complex Emergency

Regional Team: ECA

Disaster Declared:
01/31/07

Brief Description: Increasing violence between the Government of the Central African Republic (CAR) and armed opposition groups, widespread banditry, and insecurity attributed to Chadian and Sudanese opposition forces have displaced an estimated 150,000 people in northern CAR. The most-affected areas include Ouham, Ouham-Pendé, Gribingui, Haute-Kotto, Vakaga, and Bamingui-Bangoran prefectures. Displaced families have limited access to food, water, and health care. Insecurity also prevented many subsistence farmers from planting or harvesting crops in the last October 2006 season. Recent assessments by OFDA representatives confirm that food and humanitarian indicators are in decline.

On January 31, 2007, U.S. Chargé d'Affaires A. James Panos declared a disaster in response to the increasing humanitarian needs in the county. A OFDA Assessment Team is currently in CAR to assess humanitarian conditions. OFDA is coordinating an airlift of emergency relief supplies to assist 20,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Ouham and Vakaga prefectures. Since October 2006, OFDA has supported emergency assistance programs to rehabilitate water sources and to conduct nutrition assessments in affected areas. OFDA will continue to monitor the evolving situation and provide additional assistance as appropriate.
