Most Recent Disaster Declaration:
Floods, 06-29-2010
Between June 21 and 23, heavy rainfall caused flooding in northern, western, and central Bosnia and Herzegovina. As of June 23, the Bosnia and Herzegovina Red Cross Society reported that the floods had submerged more than 4,000 houses; displaced approximately 13,000 individuals; and damaged electricity and water infrastructure, crops, roads, and bridges. The Government of Bosnia-Herzegovina (GoBH) Civil Protection Administration reported that the floods also led to more than 700 landslides, resulting in additional damage. According to the Bosnia and Herzegovina Red Cross Society, the most affected areas include Doboj Jug, Usora, Tešanj, and Maglaj municipalities. On June 23, the GoBH dispatched military personnel to assist with evacuations. According to the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo, teams of local volunteers provided food and shelter to affected families; however, additional relief commodities were required to meet identified needs.
On June 29, U.S. Ambassador Charles L. English issued a disaster declaration due to the effects of the flooding. In response, USAID/OFDA provided $50,000 through USAID/Bosnia-Herzegovina to the Bosnia and Herzegovina Red Cross Society for the purchase and distribution of emergency relief supplies to meet priority needs among affected populations. USAID/OFDA continued to monitor the situation in close coordination with the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo and USAID/Bosnia-Herzegovina.
