Angola - Floods

Map of Angola
Map of Angola

Regional Team: SWAN

Disaster Declared:
1/25/2007

Brief Description:
Heavy rainfall on January 22 caused extensive flooding in Angola's Luanda, Bengo, Huambo, Lunda Norte, and Benguela municipalities, killing more than 70 people, destroying homes, and displacing thousands of people. On January 24, the Government of Angola implemented an emergency action plan to provide food, housing, and medical assistance to flood-affected populations and to rehabilitate infrastructure and clear debris. The Government of Angola and the U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF) are responding to concerns that the flooding will exacerbate the spread of cholera.

On January 25, U.S. Ambassador Cynthia G. Efird declared a disaster due to the effects of the flooding in Angola. In response, OFDA provided $70,000 through the U.S. Embassy in Luanda to the non-governmental organization CARE for the procurement and distribution of emergency relief supplies to approximately 7,800 flood-affected people.
