Brief Description: On February 10 and 11, 2006, heavy rainfall caused flooding in the Tindouf Province in southwest
Algeria. The floods directly affected camps hosting Sahrawi refugees from Western Sahara and ruined most of the food stock.
According to the U.N., the floods destroyed approximately 50 percent of housing, leaving an estimated 50,000 people homeless.
The flooding also damaged hospitals, market areas, and most public buildings in the refugee camps. One person reportedly died,
and several others were injured.
On February 15, 2006, U.S. Ambassador Richard W. Erdman declared a disaster due to the impact of the flooding. In response,
OFDA provided $50,000 to the U.S. Embassy in Algiers for the local procurement of emergency relief supplies through the U.N.
World Food Program (WFP).
