THE PRESIDENT’S EMERGENCY PLAN FOR AIDS RELIEF LAUNCHES NEW PARTNER INITIATIVE OUTREACH WORKSHOPS
The Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator today announced a series of outreach workshops, as part of the New Partners Initiative (NPI). The workshops are intended to reach out to organizations with the capability to provide essential HIV/AIDS services internationally but which lack experience in working with the U.S. Government.
Community and faith-based organizations, in particular, represent vital but underutilized resources in the fight against Global AIDS. Through the NPI, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR/Emergency Plan) will provide $200 million over four years for grants to new partners to provide HIV/AIDS prevention and care services in the fifteen Emergency Plan focus countries. A series of free one-day Outreach Conferences, intended to introduce eligible organizations to the details of the NPI and of applying for U.S. Government grants, will be held starting February 22, 2006 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at Loews Philadelphia Hotel.
The fifteen Emergency Plan focus countries are among the worlds most severely affected by HIV/AIDS. Collectively, they are home to approximately half of the world's 39 million HIV-positive people and to almost 8 million children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS. By 2008, the Emergency Plan aims to provide support for the prevention of 7 million new HIV infections, treatment of 2 million people living with HIV/AIDS and care for 10 million people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, including orphans and vulnerable children.
The Emergency Plan Focus Countries are: Botswana, Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Guyana, Haiti, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam and Zambia.
The first Outreach Conference in Philadelphia will be followed by conferences in Atlanta (March 8), Denver (March 22), and Los Angeles (April 5). The sessions will provide an overview of the HIV/AIDS response in the fifteen focus countries along with information on how to apply for USG HIV/AIDS grants. The Outreach Conferences are free and open to all organizations eligible to apply for funding under the NPI.
The four Outreach Conferences will be followed by 2 three-day Technical Assistance and Capacity Building Workshops (one in Denver, CO and another in Washington, DC).
Additional details about the Outreach Conferences and the Technical Assistance and Capacity Building Workshops will follow. For the latest announcements on the New Partners Initiative Outreach Workshops, please visit the forthcoming website at http://www.pepfarnpi.com.
