Center for Global Development and Merck & Co., Inc present a discussion titled, "Can Public-Private Partnerships Help Stop AIDS in Africa? Lessons from Botswana."

An innovative model for fighting HIV/AIDS in Africa is being piloted in Botswana through a public-private partnership involving the Government of Botswana, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Merck & Co., Inc. The partnership is intended to help Botswana achieve an "AIDS-Free Generation by 2016" by expanding prevention, supporting treatment, increasing counseling and testing, and empowering communities. How does this model differ from other approaches to fighting HIV/AIDS? Has it succeeded? Can lessons from Botswana be used to develop similar public-private partnerships elsewhere in Africa? How can donors support such partnerships? Please join us for a lively discussion of these and other important issues relevant to Botswana's national AIDS program.

June 7

The Washington D.C. Chapter Society for International Development and First Voice International will host a roundtable discussion on the role of community radio and international development in Washington DC.

This is the concluding session of a three-part series about sustainability and community radio that will focus on the content people hear on the airwaves and how it gets there. Radio can be a source of information and a link between people, but what does that information sound like in different parts of the world? How does production for development purposes differ from content that is used for entertainment? What are the divergences and synergies and what are some of the common pitfalls?

June 7
The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa will host the "ICT Best Practices Forum," in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. In Africa, the level of interest in technology solutions to critical development challenges is high. At the same time, there is an essential need to accelerate the penetration and application of technology on the continent, particularly at the public sector level. Based on feedback received from government leaders and donor institutions, the best way to achieve this objective is to provide the conditions necessary for African governments and advisory institutions to share their own best practices, subsequently creating a roadmap for the future. In this way, African leaders and the institutions that support them can assist in improving efficiency and effectiveness of public sector institutions through the use of technology, creating the enabling environment for Africa to increase its own competitiveness.
June 7-9

June 11-19

Eastern Minnonite University will host a lecture about "The Natural Environment, Conflict & Peace," in Harrisonburg, VA:

Although competition over scarce natural resources has caused conflict and war throughout history, there is a general sense that such conflicts will intensify and lead to major global confrontations as we come face to face with the consequences of the abuse and depletion of our natural resources. The increasing misuse and instrumentalization of the natural world could also be seen as a conflict between humankind and planet earth. This course will explore the linkage between societies' conceptions of and relationships with the earth and the natural environment and their attitudes towards conflict and peace at the spiritual, intra personal and societal levels. It will reflect on the central question of how we can use the concepts, values, and skills of reconciliation and peace-building to live peacefully with nature, as well as with each other.

June 28 - 29

AfricaRecruit and People in Aid will be hosting a conference about, "Mobilising People in Emergency; the Role of Non-Governmental, Private and Public sector in Africa in Nairobi Kenya," in Nairobi, Kenya.

The right people in the right place at the right time: this is what is required by those organizations e.g. non-governmental organizations, (NGOs), and international organizations (IOs) responding to an emergency or a disaster such as a conflict, a flood, a famine. The private sector's investments in its countries of operation are inevitably affected by disasters. So is there need and opportunity for the private sector in Africa to work with NGOs and IOs in Africa to help those affected by conflicts and disasters and support efforts by international and local NGOs in disaster risk reduction
