Minority Serving Institutions Initiative (MSI)

USAID works to increase the number of students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), and Tribal colleges and Universities (TCUs) who pursue careers in international family planning, reproductive health, and population and the environment. This project provides internships both to undergraduates through summer internships and customized graduate degree internships, through professional development opportunities to MSI faculty engaged in research, teaching, and advising these fields, for technical experts who can engage in international activities, and through participation of these organizations in our programs. In 1994, USAID sought to expand the HBCUs' technical assistance capability in the area of reproductive health by funding JHPIEGO to partner with selected HBCUs.
