On December 17, 1999, the United Nations General Assembly declared August 12 International Youth Day to promote youth involvement and to focus on problems pertaining to them.

Many young people lack basic information about reproductive and sexual health. USAID's Office of Population and Reproductive Health seeks to serve youth through programs designed for their specific needs. The challenge is to establish patterns of informed and responsible reproductive decisionmaking early in life. Delaying sexual activity, first pregnancy, increasing responsible behavior (including abstinence), partner reduction, and condom use not only will protect young people's health and quality of life, but also contribute to the health and prosperity of the world's future populations.
