Indonesia’s National Family Planning Coordination Board (BKKBN) will graduate from USAID population assistance in September 2006. The 35-year partnership between USAID and BKKBN is an international success story. By the time of BKKBN’s graduation, the modern contraceptive prevalence rate among currently married women is expected to be close to 60 percent. From 2000 to December 2004, the rate increased from 54.3 percent to almost 58 percent, an increase representing 3 million new family planning users.
USAID’s graduation strategy is on track and meeting all milestones. Quality remains the cornerstone of the reproductive health program. In partnership with the Indonesian Midwifery Association, USAID has launched a “quality midwife” program to ensure that a critical mass of midwives in USAID program areas is using national standards and guidelines for family planning and safe delivery. This program increased the number of certified quality midwives from 300 in 2004 to more than 3,500 in May 2006. The program is now operational in 155 districts in nine provinces and has the potential to reach more than 140 million people.
