About the Event
On 25 April, 2003, the third anniversary of the Abuja Declaration, The US
Agency for International Development (USAID) co-hosted an Africa Malaria Day
commemoration at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. During the event
the Africa Malaria Report 2003 was launched and a Special Supplement to the
American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene on the western Kenya
insecticide-treated bed net trial was introduced.
The event was organized jointly by the Department of Health and Human
Services, (USAID) and the Department of State.
USAID was pleased to co-host this important event not only to commemorate Africa Malaria Day, but also to recommit our efforts offered by the Global Fund and through the Roll Back Malaria partnership to fulfill the promise of coordinated and concerted support to countries battling this heartbreaking and preventable disease," said Dr. E. Anne Peterson, MD, MPH, Assistant Administrator Bureau for Global Health, USAID. "We must keep this stark fact in mind ... a child dies every 30 seconds from this disease. Working together, we must do everything we can to turn the tide against malaria."
