Lao PDR
The Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) currently faces a concentrated HIV epidemic, with an adult HIV prevalence of approximately 0.2 percent. Since the first case was identified in 1990, the number of infections has continued to grow. In 2007, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS estimated that 5,500 people in Lao PDR were living with HIV.
.USAID’s HIV program provides HIV and STI prevention products and services to populations most at risk, especially female sex workers, their clients, men who have sex with men, and transgender individuals. Activities focus on continued support for comprehensive behavior change interventions and sexually transmitted infection (STI) services targeting female sex workers. Funds were leveraged from the Global Fund and others to provide services for sex workers and their clients in entertainment establishments in six provinces using the USAID-developed model of a comprehensive prevention package. The comprehensive prevention package approach continues to support HIV and STI prevention services in four provincial “wellness centers”; promote participatory behavior change communication activities; support STI and voluntary counseling and testing services; and provide referrals to HIV care and treatment. In
addition, USAID provided technical assistance to the Center for HIV/AIDS and STIs, including program management capacity building within four Provincial Committees for the Control of AIDS.
