Senegal

Senegal is considered to be one of the world’s success stories in HIV prevention. While other sub-Saharan African countries are experiencing the worst generalized epidemics in the world, Senegal maintains one of the lowest HIV prevalence levels on the continent and has a concentrated epidemic. The primary reasons for Senegal’s success at minimizing the spread of the disease are the country’s conservative sexual norms and active engagement by the public and private sectors ever since the first emergence of HIV/AIDS in the mid-1980s. In 2007, 1 percent of the adult population was HIV positive, and the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS estimates that Senegal had 67,000 cases of HIV.

USAID has continued to support access to prevention, care, treatment, and support services for most-at-risk populations, the general population, and people living with HIV/AIDS. Programs continue to support the decentralization of health services, expanding the role and accessibility of health posts for those in rural areas. By transferring funds to the regional and district levels, USAID helped reinforce the capacity of local teams and regional HIV technical committees.
