Côte D'Ivoire
With an estimated HIV prevalence of 3.9 percent among adults 15 to 49 years old, Côte d’Ivoire remains one of the countries most affected by HIV in West Africa. The first case of AIDS in the country was detected in 1985, and Côte d’Ivoire now has a generalized epidemic. Since 2004, HIV/AIDS-related mortality has decreased, and in 2007, an estimated 56,000 people died from complications related to the virus. It is estimated there were 450,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in the country at the end of 2009.
USAID’s HIV/AIDS activities in Côte d'Ivoire are implemented in close collaboration with other U.S. Government agencies as part of the larger President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief program, which also includes substantial funding for activities designed by the CDC that focus largely on the care, treatment, and prevention of HIV/AIDS.
