USAID Partners with Private Ethiopian Banks to Increase Credit for Agriculture and Health
On November 22, a new health sector loan agreement between USAID, the Bank of Abyssinia and NIB Bank will provide up to $13.4 million dollars in loans to private health sector enterprises. A new agriculture sector agreement makes it possible for small holder farmers and farming cooperatives to purchase agricultural equipment through lease financing. Read more here. (PDF 35KB)

USAID Collaboration Results in African Agricultural Fund
On September 27, USAID, together with six partners, announced a first-of-its-kind effort to invest $25 million in small and medium sized enterprises. The African Agricultural Capital Fund (AACF) will deliver much needed growth capital to boost the productivity and profitability of Africa's undercapitalized agriculture sector. Read more here.

USAID and Grameen Foundation Announce First Joint Guarantee
On September 21, 2011 U.S. Agency for International Development and Grameen Foundation announced that they are jointly providing a $1.5 million credit guarantee to the Peruvian savings and credit cooperative Cooperativa de Ahorro y Crédito (ABACO) to support approximately $3 million for local currency financing to two socially-focused Peruvian microfinance institutions (MFIs). USAID and PRIDE Tanzania Partner on Historic Microfinance Bond
On November 16, 2010 trading began on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange for the first ever microfinance bond in Sub-Saharan Africa. The $10 Million bond issue has been guaranteed by USAID in Tanzania to support lending through Tanzania’s Promotion of Rural Initiatives and Development Enterprises Limited (PRIDE), extending credit to poor but economically active Tanzanians owning and running businesses since 1994. USAID’s Development Credit Authority Surpasses $2 Billion Mark
In October 2010, USAID’s Development Credit Authority (DCA) surpassed a $2 billion milestone of private sector credit mobilized in developing countries. DCA uses partial loan guarantees to encourage local banks to invest locally. Read more here.

USAID and SIDA Support Credit for Bosnia and Herzegovina Businesses
On October 20, 2010,USAID and Sida signed a loan guarantee to help BiH banks finance loans to small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs). The loan guarantee will unlock up to $40 million of much-needed credit, thereby stimulating economic growth and jobs. This loan guarantee program in BiH is the first country program under the global Memorandum of Understanding that USAID and Sida signed in March of this year in Washington. Read more here (38KB PDF)

USAID/Nigeria Partners with Diamond Bank, Accion Microfinance to Develop Nigeria’s Private Health Sector
On September 29, 2010, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), with Diamond Bank Plc and ACCION Microfinance Bank Limited, announced the signing of a Development Credit Authority (DCA) guarantee of $8.7 million to support Nigeria’s private health sector. Read more here (56KB PDF)

New Initiative will Identify Policy Measures to Promote Development and Entrepreneurship
On September 22, USAID, Babson College, and the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) embarked on a partnership to strengthen entrepreneurship in different countries around the world. This innovative new project will measure entrepreneurship rates and characteristics, as well as other factors influencing small and medium business growth in Egypt, Turkey, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The partnership reflects the Obama Administration’s Global Engagement Initiative, as a means of strengthening ties between the United States and other nations, including countries with significant Muslim populations, through economic development and opportunity. USAID signs agreement with Silatech to mobilize private sector financing in the Arab world
On April 27, USAID launched a partnership with Silatech, a Qatar-based not-for-profit social enterprise, to facilitate access to finance for entrepreneurs in the Middle East and North Africa. USAID is partnering with Silatech on an investment fund to provide financing for micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises in the region. The partnership was one of the USAID deliverables for the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship that took place in Washington, DC on April 26-27, 2010.

USAID Signs Agreement with Swedish Sida, Hosts DCA Anniversary Events
USAID held a series of events on March 26 to commemorate the ten year anniversary of the Development Credit Authority and to launch a new partnership with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). Read more here.

USAID Joins With Grameen Foundation to Launch Largest Guarantee in DCA History
On October 19, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Grameen Foundation announced a new collaboration that will make up to $162.5 million in local currency financing available to microfinance institutions (MFIs) throughout the developing world. The twelve-year program is the largest credit guarantee to date under USAID’s Development Credit Authority. Read the joint press release.

USAID Launches Online Water Finance Resource
On August 19 USAID’s Office of Development Credit launched a new online toolkit that will help development practitioners explore ways of financing water and sanitation services. The website, located at www.waterfinancesite.org, facilitates a process through a set of structured questions and resource materials which assist the user in determining how to design appropriate financing interventions that both improve service delivery and expand water and sanitation services to impoverished neighborhoods.
